Complete Vitae

Dr. Mercedes Anderson is a post-doctoral fellow who obtained her Ph.D. in Counseling Psychology from Arizona State University where she specialized in diversity and multicultural practice. She graduated Summa cum laude from the University of Houston with a Bachelor of Science in Human Development and Family Studies and a minor in leadership studies.

Dr. Anderson completed her doctoral internship and practicums with Arizona State University Counseling Services. She is skilled in addressing family-of-origin issues, adjustment concerns, academic/career stress, body image concerns, trauma, depression and anxiety. During graduate school, Dr. Anderson received clinical training experiences in counseling a variety of mental health concerns across the lifespan. Her former practicums include providing trauma therapy in a community mental health clinic, conducting in-home services for older adults, and facilitating outpatient psychotherapy to children and families navigating the DCS system.

While Dr. Anderson treats a variety of issues, she is passionate about providing mental health services to individuals impacted by interpersonal violence and trauma. She received training at Empact Trauma Healing Services to provide trauma therapy to survivors of sexual assault, domestic violence, and relationship abuse. Dr. Anderson helps to facilitate post-traumatic growth by helping clients understand their psychological response to trauma, develop safe coping skills, and reclaim their narrative through cognitive processing.

Dr. Anderson takes a collaborative approach to psychotherapy with the integration of cognitive-behavioral therapy, dialectical behavior therapy, and feminist frameworks. She believes that exploring one’s life stressors within a non-judgmental and compassionate space can help individuals tap into their internal resiliency. Her goal is to build a therapeutic relationship that allows clients to connect with their authentic selves. As a multicultural-oriented therapist, she is committed to empowering clients from all backgrounds in discovering their unique cultural strengths and providing Identity-affirming services to BIPOC populations.
