Psychiatric Medication Management

Medication can be an important part of mental health treatment for children, adolescents, and adults. At Spectrum Psychology and Wellness, we provide psychiatric evaluation and medication management as part of an individualized, whole-person approach to mental health care.

Our psychiatric provider works to understand more than symptoms alone. Treatment considers your mental health history, physical health, relationships, environment, daily functioning, strengths, stressors, and treatment goals. When medication is appropriate, it is considered one part of a broader plan to improve your overall well-being.

What is a psychaitric medication management?

Psychiatric medication management begins with a comprehensive evaluation to better understand what you or your child are experiencing. This may include discussion of current symptoms, medical and psychiatric history, previous treatments and medications, family history, sleep, daily functioning, and other factors that may be contributing to current concerns.

When medication may be helpful, your provider will discuss treatment options, potential benefits, possible side effects, and what to expect. The goal is to make treatment decisions collaboratively rather than simply prescribing medication based on a diagnosis.

Ongoing follow-up appointments are used to evaluate progress, monitor effectiveness and side effects, and adjust treatment when appropriate.

Conditions We Commonly Evaluate and Treat

  • ADHD and difficulties with attention, concentration, or impulsivity
  • Anxiety disorders and excessive worry
  • Depression
  • Mood disorders
  • Trauma-related conditions
  • Behavioral and emotional dysregulation
  • Sleep difficulties associated with mental health concerns
  • Other psychiatric and behavioral health concerns

Because symptoms can have many different causes, treatment begins with an individualized psychiatric evaluation rather than assuming that medication is necessarily the right solution.

Psychiatric Care Across the Lifespan

Mental health needs can look very different at different stages of life. Spectrum provides psychiatric services for patients ages 3 and older, from early childhood through older adulthood.

Children & Adolescents

Psychiatric care for children and teens takes development, family relationships, school, behavior, emotional regulation, and the child’s environment into consideration. When appropriate, treatment may involve collaboration with parents or caregivers, therapists, schools, and other members of the child’s treatment team.

Adults

Adults may seek psychiatric care for new or longstanding concerns involving mood, anxiety, attention, trauma, sleep, stress, or changes in their ability to function at work, at home, or in relationships. Treatment is tailored to the individual’s symptoms, history, goals, and previous experiences with medication.

Older Adults

Mental health concerns later in life can occur alongside medical conditions, cognitive changes, life transitions, medication changes, grief, and other challenges associated with aging. Psychiatric care for older adults considers these factors together rather than treating mental health symptoms in isolation.

More Than Medication

Effective psychiatric treatment isn’t simply about finding the right prescription.

Our approach is therapy-informed and emphasizes helping patients understand what they are experiencing, why it may be happening, and what they can do to improve their well-being.

Medication, when appropriate, may be combined with psychotherapy, behavioral strategies, lifestyle changes, education, and other forms of support.

Patients already working with a Spectrum therapist can also benefit from greater coordination between their therapist and psychiatric provider, with the patient’s authorization.

What to Expect

Initial Evaluation

Your first appointment provides an opportunity for your psychiatric provider to develop a comprehensive understanding of what you are experiencing. You may discuss your current symptoms, medical and mental health history, medications you have previously tried, family history, sleep, daily functioning, and your goals for treatment.

An evaluation does not automatically mean medication will be prescribed. Your provider will discuss their assessment and treatment recommendations with you so that you can make informed decisions about your care.

Ongoing Medication Management

If medication becomes part of your treatment plan, follow-up appointments are used to evaluate your response to treatment. Your provider will monitor symptom improvement, medication effectiveness, possible side effects, and any changes in your overall health or circumstances.

Medications or dosages may be adjusted over time to find an approach that provides the greatest benefit while minimizing unwanted side effects.

Is Medication Management Right for Me?

You may want to consider a psychiatric evaluation if:

  • Mental health symptoms are interfering with your work, relationships, sleep, or daily life.

  • Therapy alone has not provided enough symptom relief.

  • You are interested in learning whether medication could be helpful.

  • You are currently taking psychiatric medication and need ongoing monitoring and management.

  • Your current medication is not working as well as you would like or is causing unwanted side effects.

  • You would like a professional review of your current psychiatric treatment.

Treatment is individualized, and meeting with a psychiatric provider does not obligate you to begin or continue medication.

Medication Management and Therapy

Medication and psychotherapy address mental health concerns in different ways, and many people benefit from using both.

One advantage of receiving medication management at Spectrum Psychology and Wellness is the ability to coordinate care with your Spectrum therapist, when appropriate and with your authorization. This collaborative approach can help your providers understand the broader picture of your treatment and work toward shared goals.

You do not need to currently be in therapy at Spectrum to inquire about psychiatric medication management.
